Local residents share thoughts on 'North of Hope: A Daughter's Arctic Journey'

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. - On the surface, a new book published by Kentwood-based Zondervan—"North of Hope: A Daughter’s Arctic Journey"—traces author Shannon Huffman Polson’s travels through various stages of grief.

The narrative also grips readers during Polson’s raft trip on the Hulahula River in the Alaskan Arctic. Using GPS coordinates, the author discovers the sandy beach where her father and stepmother were mauled and killed by a grizzly bear.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—  "Friends of Grand Rapids Parks" is getting reading to plant a new green space for Grand Rapids, made possible by 17 area breweries.

The ceremonial planting of Brewers Grove will take place October 17 at Riverside Park.  The event will also include a beer-inspired movie showing inside the park at dusk.  Visitors will be allowed to bring growlers.

Brewers Grove is being funded by tree beer sales.  Each participating brewery created their own version of tree beer.  The fundraiser began August 5, with many breweries donating $1 from each pint sold to the Friends of Grand Rapids Parks' Urban Forest Project.  Other participating breweries created events and promotions for the fundraising campaign.

GRANDVILLE, Mich.—A new business will open near Rivertown Crossings next month.

Jo-Ann Fabrics and Craft Stores is scheduled to open another facility at 3323 Century Center Dr. in Grandville on August 30.  The retail store is currently looking for a seasonal employee to finish out its team of new employees.  You can find the job opening by clicking here.

Duck Tape bus stops in West Michigan July 6-8

The 31-foot Duck Tape bus will roll into West Michigan this weekend.

Visitors to the bus can take part in a variety of activities, including iPad stations with tutorials on how to make a Duck Tape wallet as well as other projects, a fan photo wall,  Duck Tape formal wear and a seven-foot timeline of Duck Tape’s 70-year history.  There’s also a video and photo kiosk where you can share your Duck Tape story or snap a photo against a Duck Tape background and life-sized sculptures for more photo opportunities.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—The list of businesses participating in Restaurant Week Grand Rapids is out.

So far, 68 restaurants have signed up to take part in the annual event, creating specialty three-course meals for $25. Participants include:

Young Authors Give Back Tour stops in Kentwood to inspire new writers

KENTWOOD, Mich.—A team of authors who published their first novels before turning 27 will visit Kentwood to inspire other young writers.

On Tuesday, June 11, Saugatuck resident Susan Dennard and three other writers—Erin Bowman, Susan J. Maas and Kat Zhang will stop at Schuler Books on 28th Street SE as part of their Young Authors Give Back Tour.  The tour stop includes a free writing workshop for teenagers from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., and a book signing starting at 7 p.m.

The Young  Authors Give Back Tour is also planning stops in New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Chicago.
