Lawn Care: Why I finally had to buy a lawnmower

Lawn Care: Why I finally had to buy a lawnmower

Tis the season for lawn-care!  As a relatively new home buyer, I had the pleasure or rather displeasure of mowing and maintaining my lawn.  To be fair, I managed to find a way of not doing it and help the local economy!  I paid a neighbor kid to do it.  See my story from last year -  http://kentwood.wzzm13.com/news/environment/lawn-care-how-i-learned-avoid-cutting-grass/56569

Safe way to get rid of unwanted medication

Safe way to get rid of unwanted medication

What’s in your medicine cabinet?  Do you have bottles of old medication?  Flushing the pills down the toilet or throwing them in the trash pose potential safety and health hazards.  There is another way to get rid of unwanted prescription drugs in Kent County.

On October 28, 2011, from  8 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Kent County Sheriff’s Office and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public another opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs.  Bring your medications for disposal to Kent County Sheriff’s Office at 701 Ball Ave NE.  The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

This effort is part of the Nationwide Prescription Drug "Take-Back” Day.

Single Stream Recycling Now Available at Drop-Off Stations

Single Stream Recycling Now Available at Drop-Off Stations

News Release:  (Grand Rapids, MI) – Kent County now offers single stream recycling at all three county-operated recycling drop-off stations. Previously single stream recycling was available only to those with curbside recycling service.

Single stream recycling allows users to mix paper, plastic bottles, metal cans and glass jars together in one drop-off bin with a separate bin for flattened corrugated cardboard.

The three recycling stations, in Rockford, Grand Rapids and Kentwood, are for residents who do not have access to curbside recycling, missed their recycling day or have too much recycling to put at the curb. Residents of surrounding areas who work or travel in Kent County are also invited to use the stations.

“By converting all these containers to single stream recycling, we hope that more people will be encouraged to recycle.
