Calvin adds major, minor in public health

Beginning in the fall of 2012, Calvin College will become the first undergraduate institution in west Michigan to offer a major in public health--an emerging field, which offers a wide range of career opportunities both locally and globally.

Arlene Hoogewerf, chair of Calvin's biology department, is co-directing the new public health program with Economics department chair Scott Vander Linde. Hoogewerf says that the push to offer public health programs at the undergraduate level has occurred within the last five years.

Gerald R. Ford International Airport officials have announced the expansion of the hearing loop system installation at the airport. This system enables individuals with telecoil (T-coil)-equipped hearing devices to have public address system announcements transmitted directly to their hearing aids. This assistive listening service is available on both airport concourses, at all airline gates and holdroom areas, and now in the airport’s Grand Hall.

"We are delighted to offer this service to our customers who use assistive hearing devices," said acting executive director Phil Johnson. "By the direct transmission of gate and flight announcements to T-coil-equipped hearing aids, this hearing loop system significantly enhances the airport experience for the thousands of our customers who have experienced hearing loss.

Exercise vs TV Commercials?

Exercise vs TV Commercials?

One of my co-workers and I joined the 2012 Challenge with GV Health last month to see if we could shed the 12 pounds  this year, they are encouraging everyone, who has extra weight, to do. We were fortunate to find we could just walk across the street to get weighed in and will weigh in again at the end of the year.

In thinking about this program, I realized of course that I don’t get as much exercise as I really should, outside of walking a couple times a week. Last evening after sitting down to watch some TV and do a little knitting, I came up with a great idea, I think.

I decided that instead of watching and waiting for the many commercials to get done every half hour when watching a program, I would take that time to exercise, and so I did. I have a couple weights and a stretch band that seems to do the trick along with stretching on my own.

Safe way to get rid of unwanted medication

Safe way to get rid of unwanted medication

What’s in your medicine cabinet?  Do you have bottles of old medication?  Flushing the pills down the toilet or throwing them in the trash pose potential safety and health hazards.  There is another way to get rid of unwanted prescription drugs in Kent County.

On October 28, 2011, from  8 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Kent County Sheriff’s Office and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public another opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs.  Bring your medications for disposal to Kent County Sheriff’s Office at 701 Ball Ave NE.  The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

This effort is part of the Nationwide Prescription Drug "Take-Back” Day.
