My Town: May 15 ceremony honors officers killed on duty

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—A Walker police officer killed while trying to stop two robbers is among the nearly three dozen officers who will be honored during the Police Memorial Day of Service ceremony Thursday, May 15.

The memorial will begin at 10 a.m. inside the Grand Rapids Police Department lobby, due to the weather.  Dave Hiller, the executive director of the Michigan Fraternal Order of Police, will be the guest speaker at the event. Those who will be honored are:

KENTWOOD, Mich.—The flames were flying at Ridge Park Charter Academy last week, as eighth grade students learned fire safety from the Kentwood Fire Department.

Fire marshal Timothy Maday and fire inspector Bob Peterson took part in the presentation Tuesday, April 29. Peterson demonstrated what happens to a fire when you use the right and wrong materials to try to put out the flames.

Ridge Park Charter Academy is located at 4120 Camelot Ridge Dr. SE in Grand Rapids.   The school is part of the National Heritage Academies system.

My Town: EKHS students selected for Michigan Youth Arts Festival

KENTWOOD, Mich.-- Four instrumental music students from East Kentwood High School have been selected to participate in the Michigan Youth Arts Festival, held on the campus of Western Michigan University, May 8th-10th.  

They are:

  • Derek Bartlett (11) Honors Jazz Ensemble-Trombone
  • Peter Cripps (11) Honors Band-Tuba
  • Claire Ross (12) Honors Orchestra-Horn
  • Travon Williams (12) Honors Jazz Ensemble- Piano

For Cripps and Ross, selection was a result of proficiency examinations at State Solo and Ensemble.  Their scores were among the highest in the state for their instruments. Williams and Bartlett were selected as a result of outstanding performances at the State Jazz Festival.  The adjudicators nominated several students from throughout the state.   A panel of judges selected the top 20 students for the Honors Jazz Ensemble based on their performances.

My Town: Kent Career Tech Center names first National Tech Honor Society members

KENT COUNTY, Mich.—A dozen students from Kent Career Tech Center are now members of the National Technical Honor Society.

The students were inducted into the Tech Center’s inaugural NTHS class for demonstrating outstanding skills in their program and overall academic achievement.  The NTHS is similar to the National Honor Society, but with tougher requirements, including involvement in a career or technical education program, a 3.5 or higher GPA and community service hours.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (Davenport University)-- Blake W. Krueger, Chairman, CEO and President of Wolverine World Wide, Inc., will serve as Davenport University’s 2014 Commencement Speaker at ceremonies to be held Sunday April 27, 2014, at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids.  At the event, where more than 2,000 Davenport graduates from across the state of Michigan will celebrate their new degrees, Krueger will be presented with an Honorary Doctorate degree by the university.  Kreuger will also be honored with Davenport University’s highest honor, the Peter C. Cook Excellence in Business Award, in May of 2014.

PARK RESERVATIONS for 2014: Pinery Park reservations are now being accepted for your family reunions, showers, graduation parties, etc. These are available from May 1st through September 30th. CAR SEAT INSPECTIONS: These inspections will take place on Thursday, May 8th at Wyoming Fire Station #1, located at 1500 Burton St. SW from 5 - 8pm. Pre-register by calling Safe Kids of Greater Grand Rapids at 616-391-7233 x2.

YARD WASTE EXTENDED HOURS: The yard waste site is open Monday - Friday from 7:30am - 7:30pm and on Saturdays from 8am - 5pm through December 31st.

IRS-certified student volunteers from Davenport College are offering free tax preparation for anyone with an income of  below $52,00.00. Volunteers will prepare and e-file taxes for people on Saturday, April 12th from 10am - 1pm.
