KENTWOOD, Mich.-- Wednesday, Dec. 11 is your chance to sit down with Kentwood police to ask questions and voice concerns. 

"Coffee with a Cop" will take place at the Steak 'n Shake at 4550 28th St. SE in Kentwood.  Community members are invited to meet neighborhood officers between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m.

Kent County honors cleanest restaurants with Food Safety Awards

KENT COUNTY, Mich.—Where are the safest places to eat in Kent County?

The county health department is answering that question with the 2013 Food Safety Awards.   The agency whittled down the list of 1,654 eligible restaurants to just 269 facilities, based on routine restaurant and food service inspections over the past year.  Under the county’s criteria, restaurants that earn the award must have a certified food safety manager, no confirmed violations of the Michigan Smoke Free Law and no confirmed foodborne illness outbreaks during the year.

UPDATE: West Ottawa celebrates 'Spirit Bracket Challenge' victory

HOLLAND, Mich.-- Buffalo Wild Wings Grill & Bar will reward the winner of its “Spirit Bracket Challenge” November 5.

The restaurant organized the friendly fundraising competition as a way to promote school spirit while helping a dozen local schools raise money for classroom supplies and school activities.

Kenowa Hills 6th grade/Alpine Elementary and West Ottawa High School were the last two competitors standing, besting ten other schools in the Teriyaki 12 and Spicy 6 fundraising rounds.  In the end, West Ottawa won the Flamin’ Finals.  In addition to the funds students raised throughout the competition, West Ottawa will get an additional $2,500 from Buffalo Wild Wings.  The school will be rewarded with a special check during its celebratory pep rally Tuesday, November 5.

Shuttered Caledonia restaurant reopens in Wyoming

WYOMING, Mich.—A family-owned restaurant that closed its doors in Caledonia is now open in Wyoming.

Monterey Grill opened to the public in early October.  The new restaurant is located at 1820 44th St. SW, formerly home to Time Out GR restaurant.  Monterey Grill’s new menu includes many old food favorites from Caledonia.  Monterey Grill’s new location also includes a dining area complete with fireplace and a bar with multiple flat screen televisions.  Harder & Warner landscaping of Caledonia transformed the yard surrounding the Wyoming restaurant.

Monterey Grill closed in Caledonia on June 9, after serving up food to the community for 12 years.  The owners, Bruce and Kerri Higgins said their family had decided to pursue new career opportunities.

New bakery honored for tasty airline creation

KENT COUNTY, Mich.—  A new bakery in East Grand Rapids has earned a sky-high honor.

Cakabakery’s creation for Southwest Airlines’ inaugural event at Gerald R. Ford International Airport has been named “Cake of the Week” by Anna-Aero, an airline network and news analysis website.

The cake was presented Sunday, August 11, when Southwest began service out of Grand Rapids.  The dessert was designed by Jason Kakabaker, owner of Cakabakery, located at 1436 Wealthy St. SE.  Kakabaker was recently featured on Food Network’s “Cupcake Wars,” where he finished second.

Breweries create new beer to support trees

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—Seventeen area breweries are showing their support for trees by creating a new brew.

Each brewery will have its own version of craft tree beer on tap from Sunday, August 4 to Saturday, August 10.  The brewers used ingredients such as maple, oak and cherry to make their tree-inspired beer.  For each pint of craft tree beer sold, select breweries will donate $1 to the Friends of Grand Rapids Parks’ Urban Forest Project.  The remaining breweries are organizing other events and promotions to benefit the Urban Forest Project. The money will be used to create an official Brewers Grove within the city.
