Bikers Against Breast Cancer looking for riders for Headlight Run

A group of West Michigan bikers are helping in the battle against breast cancer.

This is the third year for the Bikers Against Breast Cancer Headlight Run.  Proceeds from the June 8th event will benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure West Michigan.  The ride starts at Teazers Bar and Grille on Ottawa Avenue NW Grand Rapids.  Bikers will make stops at Pete’s Grill & Tavern in Byron Center, as well as Champs in Coopersville.  The fundraiser includes food, auctions and a raffle.

ROCKFORD, Mich.—Camp Roger is swinging into spring with a new feature built by camp volunteers and the Wolverine Building Group.

In honor of the company’s upcoming 75th anniversary, Wolverine Building Group donated labor and materials to build a rope swing at the camp on April 26.  The project was part of Wolverine’s inaugural “Take Action Day”.

Camp Roger offers summer camp, an adventure course for school, team and corporate team building, and a Discovery Nature Center that can cater to local schools and homeschooled students.  The camp features a zip line, a four-story tree house, and a climbing tower.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.-- Experience Grand Rapids and the Kent County Lodging Association have opened the 6th Annual WAVE Award nominations.

The annual awards program recognizes outstanding service providers in the Grand Rapids and Kent County hospitality industry. Nominations will be accepted from employers and guests from April 30 to Oct.7, 2013. One award will be presented in each of the following categories: Transportation, Retail & Service, Attractions/Events, and Nightlife. New categories to the 2013 awards program include: Restaurants/Breweries, Lodging, and Volunteer in Hospitality.

Here’s your chance to win a makeover in the School Makeover contest from the Detroit Pistons and NBA Live, Learn or Play, presented by Farm Bureau Insurance.

The School Makeover, presented by Farm Bureau Insurance and the Detroit Pistons, is accepting submissions from elementary and middle schools in the state of Michigan, through June 1. Submissions at www.nba.com/pistons/farm-bureau-school-makeover should include at least four images of the school’s library or gymnasium to be considered in the selection process.

Relay for Life tribute to late Mayor Richard Root April 26

KENTWOOD, Mich.—Runners and walkers will pay tribute to late Mayor Richard Root during this year’s Relay for Life.

According to the Kentwood Public Schools’ website, the April 26 event will include a “Rick Root Lap” to the mayor’s favorite song, “Forever Young”.

Kentwood City Commissioner Bob Coughlin will discuss Root’s battle with cancer before leading the lap around 8 p.m.  He plans to carry a poster of Root around the track at East Kentwood High School.

Proceeds from Relay for Life will go to the American Cancer Society, for cancer research and to raise awareness about the disease.  For registration information, visit the Relay for Life website.
