My Town: Elzinga & Volkers hosts 'Alive 365: Safety Week'

HUDSONVILLE, Mich.-- Elzinga & Volkers Construction Professionals Wednesday announced it will kick off its second annual Alive 365: Safety Week with a safety symposium at 11:30 a.m. Friday, March 13 at The Pinnacle Center.

Representatives from Associated Builders and Contractors of West Michigan, American Subcontractors Association, Inc. and The Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration will be on hand to discuss various industrial safety topics. Keynote speaker Dr. John Austin, an internationally recognized expert in proving behavior-based solutions to organizational challenges, will discuss the importance of safety leadership within organizations.

During Alive 365: Safety Week 2015, training sessions will be held throughout West Michigan on the following topics:

  • Fall protection
  • Asbestos and lead awareness training
  • Emergency action plan training
  • Electrical safety training
  • Lift training
  • First aid
  • CPR and AED training
  • Scaffolding training

According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, there were nine construction work-related deaths in Michigan in 2014, down from 18 two years ago. Since many of the fatalities and injuries are caused by falls, slips and trips, Elzinga & Volkers hopes new awareness will help lower the number of construction-related deaths in Michigan to zero.

“Safety Week is an exciting time of year, as this annual event is an important way for us to help ensure construction workers across the state are staying safe,” said Mike Novakoski, president and CEO of Elzinga & Volkers. “This program has allowed us to provide leaders in our industry new tools and training they need to stay safe. Last year we had 72 companies attend and nearly 300 individuals complete the training, and we’re eager to increase our numbers this year.”
