Officials defend use of tornado warning sirens

KENT COUNTY, Mich. (WZZM) -- Sirens wailed across Kent County Tuesday as the entire area was placed under a tornado warning.  A day later many residents say the emergency alert system is confusing and is criticizing the decision to continue the alert when the storm had already passed by.

"At first I thought it must be the first Friday of the month because they test them.  But, yeah they just kept going and going and going and I tell you it scared my dog.  I wasn't happy about that," said Jim Berg of Walker.  "I don't understand why they had to.  I was watching tv and watching weather and everything was basically east of us."

Berg is not the only Kent County resident unhappy over it.  Municipalities across the county fielded phone calls from people trying to understand the decision to activate the sirens.
