28th Street Comerica Bank robbed

KENTWOOD, Mich. (WZZM) - Kentwood Police responded today to a bank robbery at the Comerica Bank on 28th Street SE just south of Woodland Mall.

The robbery happened about 11:30 am at the Comerica Bank at 3215 28th Street.

Police told WZZM 13's Peter Ross a suspect entered the bank and handed a teller a note demanding money. No weapon was seen. The teller handed over the money and the suspect fled in a vehicle.   Noone was hurt.  At least three customers were inside at the time.

Police are looking for a vehicle, but are not releasing a description of that vehicle.


2010 Leaf Dump

Kentwood, MI - The City of Kentwoodwill once again be offering free leaf disposal for their residents. The leaf dump, located at the Recycling Center at 5068 Breton Avenue, will be operate from 10 am to 8 pm Monday through Saturday and 12 pm to 6 pm on Sunday. It will open on Saturday, October 16th and close Saturday November 27th.

Residents will be asked to show proof of residency to allow use of the dump. Commercial disposal is not allowed at this location.

Rockford stomps East Kentwood

KENTWOOD (WZZM) -- The Rockford Rams tried to keep pace in the competitive O-K Red Conference as they faced the East Kentwood Falcons Friday.

The game was out of hand by halftime and Rockford just ran away with it in the third quarter. 

In the end Rockford rocked East Kentwood 53-7.

Safe Routes to School Grant Received

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) announced that 14 elementary and middle schools will receive more than $1.8 million in federal Safe Routes to School (SRTS) funding for safety improvements and education programs. State Transportation Director Kirk T. Steudle said, "Schools can offer educational activities and make infrastructure improvements that encourage students to walk and bicycle safely between home and school and lead healthy, more active lifestyles."

Meadowlawn Elementary School, in partnership with the City of Kentwood, will implement safety improvements and educational programming.

Grand Rapids and Kent ISD schools get hybrid buses

KENTWOOD, Mich. (WZZM) - Grand Rapids Public Schools and the Kent Intermediate School District unveiled their new hybrid school buses this morning.

The new buses are from a group of the first ten buses made in the US by Thomas Built Buses.

The Grand Rapids school district is receiving a 71-passenger bus.  The Kent ISD is receiving a 54-passenger bus.

New Gaines Township restaurant creates 85 jobs

GAINES TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM)-A new restaurant has taken over a shuttered building in Gaines Township, bringing 85 new jobs to the area.

Peppino's South Grille & Pizzeria celebrated its grand opening Tuesday. The restaurant is located off Kalamazoo Avenue across from Celebration Cinema South, in the building that once housed Malarky's Restaurant.

Crews renovated the space, adding a new sports bar area, take out area and custom wood working throughout.

"This building was literally dilapidated. It was boarded up [with] six foot weeds," said Jason Allard, co-owner of Peppino's. "I've always had a passion and dream to own a restaurant. I've been in restaurant service one way or another for the last 20 years, and I felt like this was the perfect opportunity. The economy is on an uptick, people are getting new jobs now and this was the right opportunity."

Surveillance video shows suspect breaking into Kentwood ice cream shop

KENTWOOD, Mich. (WZZM) - The owner of a Kentwood ice cream store and the Kentwood Police are looking for the suspect who broke into three shops on August 31st.

At about 5:30am, the surveillance camera at the Hershey's Ice Cream Store at Bailey's Grove captured video of the suspect as he broke through plate glass windows in the back of the shop.  The suspect also broke into two other stores in the mini mall.  The video is attached at the right.

Undisclosed items were taken and the stores did suffer some damage.
