Avantgarde Salon & Day Spa wins four awards in three years


Grand Rapids, MI, 4 October, 2010 - October marks the third anniversary for Avantgarde dè Salon & Spa of Grand Rapids and Avantgarde West of Hudsonville. For two consecutive years, Avantgarde has been awarded 'Top Hair Salon in Grand Rapids' by the Grand Rapids Press, along with awards for Top Nail Salon and Top Day Spa. "To receive such an honored distinction as Top Hair Salon during our first year of business was truly an amazing achievement," say salon owner, Bonnie Moore. "But to receive the same award two years in a row, along with two additional 'Tops' awards, is a testament to my amazing team of girls and our mission to 'Make a Difference'."

Since opening its doors in October of 2007, 'Making a Difference' has been the driving force at both salons. "You never know the circumstances of someone's life when they walk through the door.

Kentwood Police investigating fatal crash

KENTWOOD, Mich. (WZZM) - A Dayton, Ohio man died early Saturday morning when his car was hit by a semi-trailer at 44th Street and Broadmoor SE.

Mukhriddin Ibaev, 42, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash that happened about 1:30am.

Kentwood Police say Ibaev was driving a 2000 Honda Accord westbound on 44th Street  when he apparently failed to stop at the flashing red traffic signal.  His car was hit by a semi-trailer heading northbound on Broadmoor, driven by a Jenison man.  He was not injured.

Two of the three passengers in Ibaev's vehicle were taken to the hospital with injuries. 

Anyone having witnessed the crash is asked to call Kentwood Police at 698-6580.

Accident in Kentwood kills driver

KENTWOOD, Mich. (WZZM)–Police in Kentwood are trying to determine the cause of a crash that killed one person.

The accident happened around 1:15 a.m. Saturday. Police say a semi truck traveling north on M-37 collided with a car heading west on 44th Street SE.

Four people were inside the car. The driver died at the scene. The three other passengers were taken to Spectrum Butterworth Hospital with injuries.

The driver of the semi truck was not hurt.

School Districts' Count Day results

(WZZM)- Despite a decline in enrollment, Grand Rapids Public Schools says this year's Count Day was the third best in the past decade.  The district lost about 400 students, most of them from Creston and Ottawa Hills High Schools.

Other notable counts from Kent County districts include Wyoming's loss of 315 students and Kentwood's gain of 232 students. 

The districts experiencing the most significant enrollment declines in Muskegon County are Muskegon Heights, Holton and Fruitport.

Districts that were steady or even grew slightly are Montague, Ravenne, Reeths-Puffer and North Muskegon.

Former EKHS graduate in ArtPrize top 25

Kentwood, MI - David Huang, a former East Kentwood High School graduate has been voted into the ArtPrize top 25. His piece, Radiant and Efflorescence, is being displayed at the Grand Rapids Public Museum Exhibition Center and can be seen online by viewing his artist profile.

Candidate Forum at the Kentwood Public Library - Wednesday, October 13

Kentwood, MI - The Wyoming-Kentwood Chamber of Commerce will host a Candidate Forum at the Kenwood Public Library on Wednesday, October 13th from 5:30pm to 8:00pm. They have invited several candidates from both Wyoming and Kentwood from the following races:
